New Sport Pilot center offers instruction in Alaska ANCHORAGE, AK---Alaskan’s wishing to learn how to fly Light Sport Aircraft and obtain an FAA Sport Pilot license can know do so at the Alaska Sport Pilot Center. Located just 23 miles from downtown Anchorage students and current ultralight pilots can fly over the Knik Arm, or in the Chugach Mountains from Birchwood Airport. “To help the growing community of sport flyers in Alaska, we have combined our efforts to help transition former FAA Part 103 pilots into recognized FAA certified Sport Pilots,” says instructor Pete Marsh. Marsh is the first Alaskan to pass the FAA Certified flight instructor knowledge test in the weight shift category. The Federal Aviation Administration recently introduced the Sport Pilot certification on Sept. 1, 2004, that includes two new types of aircraft and type ratings for pilots. Recent surveys suggest that both these categories; powered parachutes, and weight-shift aircraft are the fastest growing sectors of general aviation. The Alaska Sport Pilot Center started this summer is a cooperative flight instruction business created by Pete Marsh and Rob Stapleton who are both Sport Pilot instructors. The Alaska Sport Pilot Center offers flight instruction and ground school for weight-shift type aircraft, and tri-axis airplane as part of their business plan will offer powered parachute instruction under the Sport Pilot rule in the upcoming months. Marsh has also been accepted by the FAA as a candidate to become an FAA certified Designated Pilot Examiner and will attend FAA courses in Oklahoma this year. Stapleton is currently instructing as a weight-shift instructor. The Alaska Sport Pilot Center can also transitioning former Part 103 aircraft into Experimental Light Sport Aircraft by registering the aircraft with the FAA. Both Marsh and Stapleton are FAA Certified Sport Pilot Instructors, USUA BFI instructors, members of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and members of the National Association of Flight Instructors. The Alaska Sport Pilot Center offers EAA, ASA and other teaching materials, and is currently a dealer for Antares-US aircraft, and floats.
